This is so strange.
The setting which is affecting Apple Music playback performance is "Shared with you", from Safari. To turn it off, open a new Safari tab on Mac OS, click at the wheel icon at the bottom of the page, and turn off "shared with you". It will automatically turn off in all your devices (with the same Apple ID). God, even music videos are not pixelating any more. Super fast.
To turn it off on IOS, Click Edit at the bottom of the Safari start page (after you open a new tab) to find this setting and disable it
Give it a try.
All I have is indeed my perception, but to make weirder and more puzzling, it is not just the Homepods, is Apple Music in general (and only Apple Music): everything in it just loads A LOT faster now, be the Apple TV Music app, the Mac OS music app, the IOS Music app, or playing directly Apple Music on the Homepods.
Prior to turning this off, I had a lot of problems with Apple music in all devices (skipping, stalling, popping, buffering issues...) its never been particularly speedy to me. Now is on par with Spotify: You click on a song, and it starts playing instantaneously.
Also, I have no more popping with the homepods when playing lossless tracks (at the beginning of the songs, mostly, or at the infamous 15 second mark).
I dont understand it either. It´s a mystery. I dont get either how a setting can dramatically affect Apple Music performance in all places, but given that turn it off or on does so in all the devices with the same Apple ID automatically, perhaps something in Icloud that messes up Apple Music performance is turned off by turning this setting off.
What "Shared with you", does in Safari?. I dont even know.
