One new feature in iOS 11 lets you easily record the screen of your iPhone as you navigate around the user interface, which can be useful when trying to help someone remotely troubleshoot an iOS problem or when making videos to share online. Since iOS 11 officially launched to the public yesterday, many users on Twitter and other sites have begun to worry that people will be able to screen record their Snapchats and Instagram Direct messages without notifications warning them of such activities taking place.

While it appears that such is the case for Instagram Direct, Snapchat will still let you know when someone is screen recording your privately messaged snaps. Thanks to a tipster who emailed us this morning, we decided to test out sending both still images and videos through the two previously mentioned apps, and discovered that Snapchat treats iOS 11's screen recording feature just as it does for taking a screenshot.

After using screen recording, the sender (left) is shown in-app screenshot icons and the receiver (right) gets notified

If your iPhone is locked, you'll get a push notification saying someone "took a screenshot!" of either your photo or video, and if you're within the app then Snapchat will still display the double-crossed arrows and let you know that the receiver took a "screenshot just now." So, while Snapchat isn't able to directly tell you that it's a screen recording on iOS 11, you'll still know that your DMs are being saved. Stories, on the other hand, appear to be less abiding to the screen recording/screenshot notification system, at least for now.

Instagram Direct doesn't yet appear to have such a feature for iOS 11 screen recording warnings. Similar to Snapchat, Instagram Direct lets you send disappearing photos and videos to other users, and includes a screenshot notification whenever the recipient captures the content you sent privately.

In tests on iOS 11, neither photos nor videos captured via screen recording in Instagram Direct told the sender that such an action had taken place. If screen recording becomes a bigger issue for these private messaging apps, and others like them, it's likely that developers will begin to implement more direct warning systems for users to look out for.

Take a look at our guide for iOS 11 screen recording to learn more about the new feature, and then check out our complete iOS 11 Roundup for all of the major -- and minor -- additions that were introduced in the new software update.

Thanks, Joshua!

There's multiple ways around it still. The coding of their application has some big loopholes. And no I'm not talking about jailbreaking, however that is one way around these notifications. Always that lovely word to the wise...as if we all haven't heard it before but... don't send anything out into cyberspace that you wouldn't want others to see... nothing is actually private.

What if I use the 'Screen Recording' feature from QuickTime Player on my Mac - and have my iPhone connected via USB?

Yep, that's another way to do it.. no notification sent. I use this all the time when watching live online concerts. I pay for the stream but there's no way on the original site to watch it again. Sometimes I'm busy, so I miss the live Q/A.. this way I can go back and watch the show again and see the questions asked. I love that feature!

I didn't update my Snapchat app when iOS 11 came out, didn't want whatever API was in iOS 11 for Screen Recording to be in the Snapchat app, but I've yet to test whether this worked

Thankfully I have a 6s on 10.2 jailbreak so I can always use this as backup, but it's been nice to have my main phone be able to record secretly, very inconvenient having to go to another phone I don't use that much

Also, there still is a way to screenshot without people knowing if you're on a stock build, but you'll have to delete and download the app again every time so it's a hastle for most

I forgot Snapchat was still trying to do this. It's annoying because sometimes I want to screenshot something funny, but it would be awkward if it notified the person. Oh well, I don't really use it anymore.
[doublepost=1505929001][/doublepost]So, what if you connect the iPhone to a Mac and use QuickTime Player to show the iPhone's screen and record it*? I could test it but don't care enough to do it.

* In QT player, file > new movie recording, choose your iPhone as the camera source. Awesome hidden feature from years ago.

Also, for some reason the sidebar for only this news are all in italics
So are the comments on under the article (not in the forums, but on the actual article page). I thought everyone was just fooling around, then I realized nope. :D

This definitely had to have been recently added or doesn’t work for Snapchat stories. I tested it with my friend, recording his whole story. No notification got sent to him. Maybe it’s just inbox snaps and not stories or they just updated it for everything.

I have used QuickTime on my MBP to record a snap and didn't run into any problems (or saw the notification). Hopefully this hasn't changed with iOS 11/High Sierra. Love that feature!
