My MBP is about 6 months old and I know I'm going to have it until it dies. I want to cover it with AppleCare but I have never not bought AppleCare with a new Mac until this one. I know i can purchase it up to 1 year into owning the computer, but do i have to buy it directly from Apple?

Could I just buy one of the many that are one eBay and activate it on my MacBook Pro? Anyone ever done this before?

There have been numerous threads discussing this.

You're fine to buy it off eBay.

I got the AppleCare for my MBP at half price off eBay. I've had two repairs so far, so it's fully valid.

Remember to always check the sellers history, if anything seems suspicious just walk away.
