getting closer to pulling the trigger. basically considering the stock M4 w/512 gb v. the stock M4 Pro w/512 gb. The M4 is about $1350, the M4 pro is about $1700. I am currently surviving with a stock 2011 13" macbook pro. is the $350 difference really worth it? I mainly do typical consumer level work on my laptop. Don't know what the future will bring.

I say it is, primarily because it's just $350 and in the long run (how long you plan on keeping your machine) it will help. I just recently had the 14" M4 Pro and it was fantastic. Zippy, and easy to carry around. Upgraded to the 16" MacBook Pro so I could get the Max chip.

The biggest thing to remember when buying based on CPU is that you can't upgrade it. In 5-10-15 years the extra horsepower, no matter how minuscule, will be a benefit. As will the ram.

Probably not. The m2 with 8gb of RAM was the low end of performance for programming. I replaced it with a 14" m4 pro with a nano-texture display from Apple, so I couldn't get any discounts from Amazon or Best Buy. At around $2500 I'm still not sure it was worth getting the m4 pro over the m4.

But in 14 years, I'm not sure that the m4 pro chip is going to be much better than the m4.

On the other hand, if you do need the CPU power, the m4 chip is ridiculously fast. It's like driving a bike at warp speed, you press a button and things instantly happen, no matter what you ask of the mac.
