Purchase iPad..then Trade-in a phone and return the iPad?

I've purchased an iPad and started a trade-in of a iPhone X. What happens if I dislike the ipad and want to return it? Will Apple keep the phone and give me the gift card or is it cancelled if I return the tablet?

Best to phone Apple directly and ask them. Then you at least have verification. Take name of whom you speak to.

I'm pretty sure you'll end up with a credit in your Apple account for the value of the trade in. Which you can then use in the future. Apple also allows trade ins for straight credit. If you want the credit in your account but aren't ready to buy something yet.

In the US you can only trade in a device for a similar one so say an iPhone for an iPhone. In this instance if you mail in the old iPhone and return the new one then the trade in partner will attempt to return your old phone. Additionally, if you traded your old phone in person and return the new phone you'll get an Apple gift card/credit.

What it sounds like though is you bought an iPad separately and are simply sending your old device to Apple as a separate transaction since Apple will not allow you to trade in an iPhone toward an iPad so technically it's not a trade in. If you return the iPad then nothing should happen since technically the iPhone was not apart of the original transaction.
In my opinion the better move would have been to get the credit from the iPhone first then apply it toward the iPad but as of now it sounds like you paid full price for the iPad and will have Apple credit as well from the phone.

That's not true. When you purchase something using the App Store app you can select trade in and select any device no matter what you are purchasing.
