So, I bought the 3GS, activated it, etc.

When I got home, I took my old iPhone 3G and "Erase(d) all content and settings." Now, I'm getting the screen that tells me to insert a SIM and connect to iTunes to active the iPhone 3G.

I just want to use this iPhone as an iPod touch (for a family member). How do I do this?

Thanks

Remove SIM from the 3GS, insert it into the 3G, and connect to iTunes. It will activate it. When the screen comes up in iTunes, use "Set up new phone" (if you don't want to have old settings).

When done, just remove the SIM from the 3G and put it back into the 3GS.

The other thing you can do is jailbreak it.

This is why when you follow the directions you DO NOT SWAP SIM CARDS to upgrade to a new iPhone. Specifically Apple says not to do this in a KB article and in upgrade instructions.

If you followed those instructions your old SIM will be deactivated for the network but will always activate the phone in iTunes. (I do things this way for my old first gen.)

But if you did swap sims, the quoted instructions here are the way to go.

Thats exactly what I did and I gave it to my girlfriend
