I was in the Apple store in Burlington Ma today, looking to replace my 2008 iMac numeric keyboard due to the keys just getting too sticky to be usable. I'm not complaining about the keyboard; 4 years was good enough. In the old days people talked about sticking keyboards in dishwashers, but now I don't think the current keyboards would put up with it.
So I go into the Apple store and it's very crowded; lots of people shopping, talking to blue shirts, waiting for the Genius bar, etc. The blue shirts are busy talking to people or checking the iPads or sales devices (like an iPod Touch with a card reader) for what to do next. I have the Apple store app, so I go over to the display and they do have the numeric keyboards. Open the app, recognizes I'm in the Burlington store, etc. It seems all you need to do is scan the bar code for your purchase and sign into your Apple ID and make the purchase. From a techie point of view it seems like a great idea and I don't have to wait around for a blue shirt to find some time to take my credit card, scan it on their device, etc.
Then I'm thinking..wait a minute...how in the world do I make sure the security people don't grab me? I would not have a printed receipt or a bag and the only record would be on the App or Apple servers; I'd just be walking out with a keyboard. I couldn't bring myself to take the chance. With all the blue shirts busy and my back not in the mood to stand around I decided to come back another day when it's not so busy.
How in the world do you keep the "loss prevention" blue shirts from grabbing you if you make a purchase via the Apple store app? How do they know whether or not you just made a purchase via the app or are a thief? I must be getting a bit to paranoid as I get older and read about "loss prevention" people grabbing people.
And even with WWDC starting monday, lots of people looking at purchasing stuff. Maybe most people don't even know about WWDC.
