Purchasing an Iphone 3g Need advice.

I'm already locked into a 2 year contract with att til 2011 and a friend is selling his Iphone 3g so I'm thinking about buying it from him. My question is can I just plug my att sim in the phone and start using it as a phone and add a Data plan through att after? or do I have to do some other special things such as unlocking the phone?
