Hello
I have a macbook pro with OS X 10.6.8 and everything was working smoothly. I decided that I wanted ftp server so I installed pure ftp manager. After installing it (I skipped most of the wizards) I noticed something weird:
in the System Preferences->Accounts it changed my account name to My Virtual User (or something like that). It also changed my default terminal and my home, so it scared me and I decided to uninstall it with app zapper. After that I tried to rename my account name back to original but I couldn't (it said that the name is not available). Also I tried to logged in from terminal but it asked me for login and password. I check at System Preferences->Accounts and I restored my terminal path. It appeared to work, but I couldn't execute basic commands like: 1) tar because of a bad uid and 2) copy-paste from finder due to unexpected error. It seemed very weird (like I become a ghost user) so I thought that everything would be fixed with a restart.
After the restart, all of my settings have dissapeared (my desktop wallpaper, my dock bar, browser history, browser profile etc.). It also shows error because it can't find the necessary folders with the browser profiles...
On system preferences -> accounts I see only one user but I couldn't change it back to my original name (it said, name is not available) even though it didn't exist on the account name list. I also can't access my "advanced options..." on my accounts even though I logged in as root and unlocked it.
I tried many things to fix it like:
1) Create new user, delete the old one from accounts (not the home folder). Change the name of the new user to the original (the first one) and then transfer the old home folder to my new. It didn't work.
2) Logged in like a root, fix permissions from Disk Utility. I also gave chmod -R 777 / on terminal and then fix permission again. It also didn't work.
3) Create new administrator user, try again advanced options but it didn't appear either...
It seems to me like I am stuck on a virtual user, because on the terminal I see before the dash "my_old_username:/ root#". I tried everything, I can see my old apps etc. and the hard disk seems ok, I just lost all my settings and it seems like I don't have permissions even though I am root.
Any ideas what else can I try? I am thinking of installing again pure ftp manager but I don't know what I could expect or what I could try.
I am stuck and my final solution is to delete everything and install it again, but I believe there should be another way, my programs are there and seems they are working, it just the accounts that has some weird problem...
Thank you
