Purge iPhoto Can I overwite orignals with edits?

I am using iPhoto and the built in editor and an external editor. If I go through an event with 50 or so pictures and edit each one, can I overwrite the originals with the edits for that event? Certain events I do not need the originals, and at 2.5mb a piece thats an extra 125mb per event. Thanks.

Export the edits (using 'current' format) and delete the originals. Best way I can think of.

That would work I guess. Seems like there should be an easier way.
