So I'm running low on space on my MBA and I was wondering if there is an efficient way of removing mass amounts of music from iTunes, but not all of the music. Basically there is a ton of songs that I simply don't listen to any more, and most of which I can get on Spotify. At the same time I would like to just store these on an external hard drive.

In short I want to separate my iTunes library, keep the files, and not have a bunch of (!) next to the removed songs.

Delete the files in iTunes, but choose not to move to Trash when prompted. Then move those songs to another storage device.

Also, you can re-import those songs again if you wish and leave them in place by having iTunes not manage your files in preferences. You'll get the ! then when you're not home, but they will be available when you are.

If you are deleting them outright - I would say don't move them to an external drive and wait for iTunes match - then you can chuck them.
