As I'm not intimately knowledgeable on how exchange servers work, I thought I'd ask for some help here.
My university has all email set up through Microsoft Exchange. I currently have my email account set up in Mail app and did have it on my iPhone as well, before I sold it on eBay.

Now, if I happened to have the Mail app on my iMac open and received an email, it would automatically show up in my Inbox without having to click "Get Mail." I assume this means the mail was being pushed to me. Would I have to change settings or set anything up on my iPhone, or should my current account setup make the email automatically pushed to my iPhone?

Talk to the IT dept at your school to make sure that they'll give you ActiveSync access with your iPhone. If they are going to support it, then you just select "Exchange" when you set up the email account on your iPhone... you don't need to do anything special.
