Push notifications - Gmail PWA in Safari

Been playing with the last couple rounds of the Sonoma beta and have already replaced 3-4 apps with their Safari PWA equivalent.

But I can't seem to get badge notifications for Gmail. Is this a Gmail thing? Or is there some setting I need to configure? (I have desktop notifications turned.)

I'm also hoping that there is a way to add the unread badge count. I've used Mailplane for a long time but I am concerned about the long term viability of using it considering the author is barely maintaining it at this point and has not made a native ARM based build for the m1/m2 machines. I'm pretty happy with Gmail as a Safari web app with the exception of the unread badge.
