Does anyone know how to have Finder place items that are replaced by items with the same name in the trash rather than deleting them completely? I often replace a file and then realize that I want it back, but its not in the trash and so cannot be rescued without Time Machine. Any ideas?

The only way to get "Finder" to do that is to be an Apple engineer and rewrite Finder's code and release it in an OS update... or, create an AppleScript of your own. (for example)

Thanks for the replies. I thought there might be a setting somewhere that I couldn't find but I guess not. Oh well.
