i've been playing around with creating a clone of my hard drive onto a usb. I have a 64 GB SSD in my 2011 MBP with about 29 GB of data on it. I formatted a 32 GB Mushkin USB drive with 1 partition and GUID, using the disk utility. I then put a clone of my HD onto the USB using Super Duper. It created the copy perfectly. I then booted from the USB by holding the Option button during start and selecting the USB. It took about 5 minutes to load. In a TOTAL emergency, this would work. The problem is that it is really slow. It does open everything but the transfer rate is so slow that i would only use this as a last resort. I have a copy of my HD on a WD My Passport and the throughput speeds seem much higher. At least I know the USB works now.
