Putting a shortcut of a folder on a desktop

I am trying to put a shortcut of my folder onto my desktop. When I do this with dropbox, it says that the connection is lost, do you want to resync it. I am not sure if I am actually moving the location of the dropbox folder or if I am just creating a shortcut.

Are you right clicking and selecting "Make Alias" ? If not, you're probably not doing the right thing.

How exactly are you creating it? Right-click on the Dropbox folder and select "Make alias". Then drag the alias to your Desktop.

I didn't even think to do a right click, i just clicked and dragged, in Windows it automatically makes a shortcut, I was thinking it did the same thing here

Hold Option-Command while you drag, to make an alias.
