I love my SS apple watch, but there are times when I need to wear my mechanicals. However, I want to constantly have my fitness data. So far, every time I have worn my mechanical I have just strapped on the apple watch upside down on my right wrist.

The question I have is, If i just put the apple watch head in my pocket, will it track my calories and movements? I understand it wont track my heartbeat.

Thanks

Get a bigger band and put it around one of your ankles? :)

I went for a bike ride on Sunday and put the watch in my backpack. Was surprised to find it thought I was exercising for 35 of the 65 minutes. I assume it picked it up from my HR strap I wear on my wrist while I ride, via HealthKit. It would be nice if the manually entered workouts in the Health app would fill the exercise ring.

I dont think the activity/ workout uses the HR monitor as much as some members here are inclined to believe.

I think it uses the GPS (from the iPhone) and the HR monitor very sparingly.
I believe it uses the accelerometer and gyroscope more than anything.
One way to double check is to turn off the heart rate sensor and checking exactly what is and what isnt updated.
