Was wondering how you put your MBA (or any other MacBook) to sleep. Do you just close the lid? I know the Touch Bar MBP had an option to add a sleep button to the bar but for those of us who don't have that, what do you do? I made "turn off display" an option in hot corners but I don't think this is the same thing. I think just the display is off.

Also does closing the lid to effectively the same thing as pressing sleep on a Touch Bar?

I just close the lid. My M1 Air can sleep for days on end and not use any battery power. However, if it is plugged into a second monitor and I don't want to close the lid, I just mouse up to the Apple in the top left and click 'sleep'.

If I'm picking up my laptop, then I just close the lid to put it to sleep. If it's plugged into peripherals at a desk, I use ^⌘Q, ESC to lock it and shut off the display.

good to know - thank you everyone for your responses. It seems in general, closing the lid does the job. Apart from when hooked up to other things. thanks!

Personally I have found better battery life by singing a lullaby to it before closing the lid. To each their own.
