I am on the fence for a new 13in rMBP to replace my 2013 model which I bought new. I would like to keep the 2013 and store it away.

Recently I broke out the Windows desktop I stored in 2011 when I bought the iMac I am still using today. It was great fun strolling down memory lane, I kept all the programs, saved data, etc.

When I disconnected item Window’s box, all I did was update WIndow’s, updated all 3rd party drivers and ran CCleaner. Shut it down, put it in a acceptable box taped closed.

What would be the best way to store a 2013 rMBP that would give me the greatest chance of it waking up 5/8/10 years from now?

I have the original packaging and the “Cool, Dry Place” to store it.

Only thing I can think of that I have control over is the Battery. It has 141 cycles and Normal health. Would it be best to charge to 100% or quit charging, let it go dead through use and tuck it away dead?

Also I have a Foodsaver with bags that would fit the rMBP .. Would it hurt to vacuum pack it? May sound odd but would keep moisture / humidity out.

Due to the batteries, if you want to keep them going, you'll need to charge it to 50% every 6 months or so. Storing them at 50% charge is recommended. I would consider a near vacuum seal a great idea.

From Apple's own knowledge base: https://www.apple.com/batteries/maximizing-performance/

"Store it half-charged when you store it long term.

If you want to store your device long term, two key factors will affect the overall health of your battery: the environmental temperature and the percentage of charge on the battery when it’s powered down for storage. Therefore, we recommend the following:

  • Do not fully charge or fully discharge your device’s battery — charge it to around 50 per cent. If you store a device when its battery is fully discharged, the battery could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding a charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may lose some capacity, leading to shorter battery life.
  • Power down the device to avoid additional battery use.
  • Place your device in a cool, moisture-free environment that’s less than 32° C (90° F).
  • If you plan to store your device for longer than six months, charge it to 50 per cent every six months.
Depending on how long you store your device, it may be in a low-battery state when you remove it from long-term storage. After it’s removed from storage, it may require 20 minutes of charging with the original adapter before you can use it."
