Putting Videos on iPod Video

Hey all,
I just got myself a 2nd hand iPod video. I am sure this has been asked before but I find myself kinda lost in this aspect. I have some .avi and some .mpg files I would like to put on my ipod. I tried jsut dragging them from the library to the ipod(in itunes) but that didnt work . How do I get these .avi and .mpg files up on there.

Free solutions are the best, I dont want to pay for a fancy program.

I actualy tried those and it didnt work but I figured it out last night I had some firmware and update problems but I got it sorted now and I am also using a great program called iSquint. Thanks for the help
