Hi MacRumors forum:
When my Display sleeps, the integrated speaker also cuts out. Is this normal behaviour for a monitor with integrated speakers (specifically, the ASUS PB238Q)? Connected via DVI/3.5mm audio jack.
I hope someone with this monitor or similar monitor set up can comment. (I really hope my new monitor is not broken!)

[More detailed discussion]
I just got a new ASUS PB238Q monitor (to replace an 8 y/o monitor that finally died after pretty hard use), it comes with integrated speakers as an extra. I have it connected via DVI for video and 3.5mm audio (from Mac's earphone out). When Snow Leopard's 'Display Sleep' kicks in (DVI signal ends) either because the the Energy Saver Timer setting is met, or is activated via mouse position to a Hot Spot, the LCD/LED panel darkens as expected however, the audio also cuts out. I've searched the manual, and online data/specs/forums; but found no mention of whether this is normal behaviour or not.
I can better understand this speaker-cut-out behaviour if I had used HDMI as the video+sound combo input, but seems odd for sleep to cut the separate 3.5mm audio input.
Previously I've played audio via the Mac's single internal speaker for music/audiobooks. Letting the screen go dark is a good thing when I just want music played or audiobook read to me before bed; then the computer sleeps shortly after it stops playing the audio.
Now when the screen sleeps, I lose audio from the monitor's speakers as well. It's abrupt. I can work around it by disconnecting the audio jack from my Mac, and use the internal speaker as before, so I still have sound when the screen sleeps. But this seems to defeat the purpose of having new stereo speakers. I know they sound muffled and are not great speakers, but I did paid for them and want to know they're "functioning as intended and designed by the manufacturer".
I contacted ASUS support twice, but the representatives seem confused as to what the proper behaviour should be. One told me speakers should cut out, another said it should keep playing sound. ASUS support then directed me to 1-812-282-2787 for further detailed support. I internet-searched this phone number; seems it's NOT toll-free (Indiana, USA area code) and some forum posts complain of a ~$50 phone bill a month later. So i'm not trying that number. We all know how tech support can be if you exhaust their database of info.
Hence this post on MacRumors.
I hope you folks can offer some comments/reassurances/suggestion. I'm hoping that my new monitor (no dead pixels!!) is not broken, but is "perfect" as it is.
Thanks for your time!
