Following the recommendation of some here, I decided to go with the LaCie Rugged 256 GB Thunderbolt as my boot drive instead of my internal HDD. I copied a clone of the internal HDD and immediately noticed my mid-2011 27" iMac starting and running much faster than before, with the SSD at 50% capacity.
However, when I did a BlackMagic Speed Disk Test on it, the speed wasn't much faster than 70/MBs for read or write. Also, only a couple of the items listed below were marked with green checkboxes (sorry, I accidentally dumped the screenshot).
Today, I decided to completely erase the drive and reinstall OS X Mountain Lion with only the software I plan to use. Now, my drive at 30% capacity is really screaming fast:
As you can see, most of the boxes below are checked in green.
From what I've described above, is there any way to tell what would have caused the vast difference (4x) in speeds indicated? Was the SSD overloaded or formatted incorrectly?
