Q re Time Capsule and backing itself up to USB HD

I’m thinking of hanging a 2TB external drive off of my 1TB Time Capsule. Probably not for added Time Machine storage, but simply to do the occasional manual backup of the TC. I see Airport Utility has an “Archive...” button for that purpose.

Quesion: if I use a USB HD to Archive my Time Capsule, can I also use that HD for other purposes? In other words, does the archive take over the whole volume?

(I really like the way the TC itself does NOT take over the whole internal volume: I back up to it as usual, but yet I can also serve other files off of it.)
