What does everyone think about this? I have a 2014 MacBook, would rather a 13" but I need Quad Core for video editing for Youtube and GoPro.

Also what time of year do Apple tend to refresh?

I mean you could read the other threads or just look at past history ..... You won't be getting an update until September at best.

Probably September through November.

Not that far off. But if you need it now, can probably score a good deal on a 2017 or even 2016 15 inch.

Although I'd be holding out for a possible new keyboard...

There's a chance that the 13 inch will get a quad core this year - although I've heard a dedicated GPU is out of the question regardless. Stick with a 15 inch if video is your main concern.

If it's going to be your only machine and you need to do video work, year, stick with a 15 inch and shop around now. Sure to be some good deals out there, including refurb.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a refresh during the summer. Apple rarely updates in July/August but it also rarely leaves the MBP with 400+ days without update.

There may be a new MacBook this year, but I think it's pretty unlikely be quad-core.

It would likely be Amber Lake Y, which is rumoured to be dual-core 14 nm.

Whether it's still 12" or if they introduce another 13" model is a separate question.

However, if you mean quad 13" MacBook Pro, I'd say a good bet it WILL be released this year, and likely by October.

Says the guy who was so sure it would happen at WWDC. Set your expectations as low as they can go and you'll never be disappointed. ;)

That being said, I'm confident October is a safe bet to make at this point; no one should expect a refresh before then. Will leave my expectations at this: quad-core (hex-core for the 15"), an improved keyboard, and a price drop.

An October event would be a good opportunity to refresh the entire Mac line and make a big deal over the two extra cores.

As for 400+ days, these days Apple has no problem whatsoever leaving a product without updates for that long (with the exception of the flagship iPhones, of course). The last time it happened was in 2016, with not even a minor spec bump until the October event, at which point Skylake had already been out for a year.

It's possible there will be a surprise improvement we don't know about yet, such as a higher-res screen or Face ID, to help justify the extra wait.

Looking over at the Dell XPS line for 2018, the 13's are Quad Core and the 15's are Hexa Core. As such it would be reasonable to assume Apple do the same for the Macbook Pro, ready for the launch of the new Mac OS in Early October. New hardware always comes after the back to school promo's, never during the promo.

In parallel to this I think a huge shift is going to take place soon over to ARM - I think they'll run the ARM based Macs alongside the intel ones for a time. Look at the performance of them in the iPad Pro, iPhone X/8/8plus. They have also gone fully with Metal instead of OpenGL and OpenCL. As such I think these spec bumped Intel machines in October will be the last major bump for another 12-18 months and the completely new ARM devices will be introduced next March or WWDC 2019.
