Hi All

Just collected two Power PC Mac's of a neighbour for free ... he was throwing them out!!

1 x Dual G4, but this won't boot (clicking noise from the power supply) highly spec'd with max ram, a gpu and sound card and an older apple display.
&
1 x Quad (water-cooled) G5, last model to be made, with 8GB of of Ram and a 23" ACD.

I took them to have a tinker and play with. Always wanted one of these back in my collage days. The G5 runs perfectly, no water leaks, both CPU's at the same temperate etc.

I don't know what to do with them TBH, I thought they'd be worth something to someone, any ideas on price? If I had the space, I'd set up the G5 but I just don't and not the most practical to use daily. I've stuck a SSD in the G5 and its surprisingly quick for an old machine!! Toyed with the idea of running Sorbet Leopard etc on it but haven't had the time.

I know the water cooled G5's aren't exactly everybody's favourites.

Also toyed with the idea of gutting the G5 and putting my high end gaming PC inside the case, I've always liked the idea of doing that!!

I've attached a photo of the CPU's from the G4, can't work out exactly what model it is.

You could probably get $100 for the Quad, $150-200 for the Quad and the display.

Back when I was using my Quad as my primary driver I used it for web browsing, word processing, email, graphic design and some gaming.

Adobe CS4 will run as will Office 2008. The Word format of Office 2008 is still standard as is the format of InDesign CS4. So, someone could send you a Word doc from a modern PC running the latest version of Word and you could open it with no problems in Word 2008. You could even use Office 2004.

With InDesign you could save out an IDML document from the latest version of InDesign and open it in CS4. Photoshop and Illustrator are Photoshop and Illustrator. They'll open later files.

What I did for a browser was run TenFourFox with several addons. I created a 10GB ram disk (my Quad has 16GB ram) and put the app and my profile/cache on the ram disk. Worked just fine.

So, a Quad is still very much usable its just a matter of how much effort you're willing to put into it to get a result.

A working G5 Quad with a case in excellent condition. Yes, it has some value. Don't ship it. Besides weighing a ton. If you don't pack it perfectly. You'll destroy the handles (and value). I couldn't say the exact value but one with less RAM and pretty stock config just sold recently on eBay for $450 before shipping. That might be the going rate, undervalued or someone was desperate and bought it.

Personally, I cringe at the idea of gutting a working Mac to make an ATX conversion. Dead Macs are A-OK but not working ones. I've done a couple. But only with dead Macs.

The G4 probably isn't worth much if it isn't working. You could do an ITX or mATX conversion of the G4.

I wish Apple people would learn they need to save the packaging for all their Apple products.

They are worth so much more in resale, save so much time and money shipping, or are really nice as hand me downs.👍
When my boss bought a 2010 MP in 2013 for me at work I specifically asked him if I could have the box it came in and he said no problem. That box is still in my garage (with all the foam inserts) and since the 2010 MP is the same shape as a G5, if I ever need to ship a G5 that's the box it will go in.

The box has already been to Kentucky and back, used to ship a PowerMac 6500 to @bunnspecial, who returned the box to me. The best thing about the box is that it came from Apple's refurb shop so there is no branding or graphics whatsoever on the box. It's solid white.

Please do not gut a perfectly working G5 quad. There are plenty of non-functional G5 systems which would be suitable for gutting. Perfectly working G5 quads are not nearly as plentiful.

I had overall 3 G4 Cubes in my lifetime (only 1 in my possession currently) and the second that I bought had the complete boxes (with much scotch tape), manuals, foams etc, but due space saving in my apartment I got rid of it. Here in Brazil it's pretty rare to find any original boxes and was a bad decision.
