Quake 4 - problems with graphics on Quake 4 macbook pro

Can anyone help me? I recently bought Quake 4 on my late 2011 macbook pro 13".
It works fine but the graphics look bad. There's no shading or shadows. The graphics look quite flat and there's no smoothness in the graphics.
I've even chosen different graphics settings, but it still looks bad.
I have Doom 3 which works fine, but for some reason Quake 4 looks bad.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?

The game is almost 7 years old, it probably just looks bad due to how it was created for graphic cards back then.

you might be right, but i've seen gameplay on macbooks on YouTube, and the graphics are far better. All my other games work fine (Doom 3, Borderlands, Batman Arkham Asylum, etc...)
Everytime I try to change the graphics settings on Quake 4, it says "changes will take effect on next startup", but when I restart the game, the changes don't happen.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

I have the exact same problem as you, on my 2011 iMac. Did you ever find a solution?
