Quake 4: Sound card not supported (on MBP)?

(I've already posted this in the Games forum, but thought that perhaps this was a more appropriate place for it…)

Does anyone know why Quake 4 says my 17" MBP's sound card "does not support OpenAL" and therefore why I get no sound when playing the game? It's rather annoying, since the game runs soooo nicely on the MBP.
