Hi, I have a macintosh LC III that i recently fixed. It wouldn't boot due to a bad Hard disk. Funny thing is that i opened the hard disk and just barely pushed the heads towards the outside of the disk. The computer booted fine as long a i did this before start up. Does anyone know what causes this? I'm very interested to find out.

haha, I don't know the answer, but I'm pretty sure if you keep opening the HDD anywhere other than a clean room it won't stay working for too long.

Wow, I can't believe you didn't destroy the drive.

me too, one speck of dust can scrap a drive. I tried it multiple times to make sure that it worked. then i took a small peice of plastic and glued it inside the drive to tether the movement. it never failed.

Funny thing is, i mended a small peice of plastic to keep the drive functional. in creating the small rig, i sanded and cut the plastic with the disk drive open. It was all done in the booth of a dusty old sound room.
