Just drag the file from your applications folder to the dock. Easy as that/

Or, while it's running, right-click on its Dock icon and choose "Keep In Dock".

You can also slide the dock icons around to reposition them.

Right click or you can just click and hold for a couple of seconds. Its real simple, and if you want to move the dock shift click the divider (the line next to the trash can and the apps) and move it to the right of the screen left of the screen or back to the bottom. :)

similarly, right clicking (or control+click) on the separator will give you other options dealing with the dock, like magnification and hiding prefs. this allows you to change dock settings without opening System Preferences.

is there a way to add a link to the applications folder to the dock?

I have my commonly used apps there but to get to anything else I currently open a finder window and click on "applications" in "places" in the left sidebar. Whats the quickest/easiest way to get to the applications folder?

Drag the Applications folder onto the Dock... :p from there you can right click it and access the applications.

ahh, thats probably the catch. I dragged it to the left hand side of my dock and it went poof and disappeared
