I have never played any of those two titles but my questions is, when you play these games can you get by on your own strategy or you have to go a through specific set of rules to complete the missions?

I ask this because I played Pharaoh and while I liked the setting and gameplay, unfortunately this game was very specific in its needs. For example if you build a bazaar you have to build it in a specific distance from neighbourhoods, like it has to be just 6 squares away from the closest home if you build it 7 or 8 squares away it wouldn't work.

Of course, they don't tell you this usually or its buried deep in the manual. Now imagine all these specifics applied to all aspects of the game and you can see how frustrating it was. I remember when I played Red Alert, you can do whatever you want as long as you get the objective.
