So, I've booted up the Apple TV app in iTunes and I like what I see! I scrolled over to a popular newish release that is in 4K on iTunes, and was either $9.99 to buy or I could get a one week free trial of HBO, which would let me play the movie through Apple TV. So I opted for that to see how the two integrate with each other. Please note: I am not using a separate application for HBO, I'm using the Apple TV app here. I realize HBO themselves don't stream content in 4K.

However, when I started playing the movie, it streamed in 1080p. I went back to see about renting or buying it to get it to play in 4K, as it's listed, and that option has gone away entirely - it's now as though I own the movie in 1080p only, and can't go any further with it.

Is that functioning the way it's supposed to? I plan on getting rid of the HBO subscription if so, it's not worth the downgrade in picture quality to me. I just wanted to see if anyone had more information on this pretty specific situation. I thought if a movie is available in 4K on Apple TV, it's available in 4K no matter what.

No, it doesn’t work that way. The content of the iTunes Store and HBO Channel are independent of each other. Subscribing to the HBO Channel will not affect the 4K status of a movie in the iTunes Store.
