I typically buy new iPhones via Apple, but I'm curious: I'm signed with AT&T (which in my area is actually reliable), and according to them I'm due for an upgrade. Does this mean I'll get a discount on the new iPhone, or that I can upgrade without penalty (i.e. before my contract is over)?

You are eligible to buy a new phone at a subsidized price, locking you into a new "2" year service contract.

What's the typical reduction in price in purchasing it from AT&T in this instance?

Thanks. Nice to know I'll be able to buy the iPhone 5 at a discount.

Just FYI you'll pay the same for the phone regardless of if you buy from Apple, AT&T, Best Buy, etc... They all do the contract upgrade discount. Personally I do Best Buy for reward points ;-)

Thanks for that. I usually buy directly from Apple, and will continue to do so. Dealing with AT&T is even at the best of times nightmarish.
