I saw a nice macbook pro from 2011... going for about 1100 used. It says it does not come with "original recovery media" ..... What does this mean and is it necessary?

It means that it doesn't come with the original OSX recovery boot disk, which leads me to believe that this computer is running SL since Lion and ML do not come with disks.

This would not be a problem if you buy the computer and upgrade to Lion or ML. Get a hold of the seller and ask which OS is running on the computer.
