Hi, quick question. I ordered my iPad 3G on 3/12, but my boyfriend did not and now he's one of the 5/7 iPad orders. So me being the nice person I am decided to go to an Apple Store and get him his on launch day, so we can both have them the same day. My boyfriend, like me, is very particular about unboxing new products, specifically Apple products, and he does not want his iPad opened at all. I know when I bought a new Macbook at an Apple store, the employee came out of the backroom with the box in one hand and the Macbook in another. This could have been just this employee that did this but I know with Apple retail stores they do like to activate products for you. And I don't want to say to my employee, whomever is going to help me, that it can't be opened, as that might bring suspicion that I'm trying to sell it on eBay or something along those lines.

So to everyone who bought a wifi model, do the employees typically ask you if you want it activated or do they just assume you do and start the process unless you say something.

They ask. They do not open unless you request.

Well for the wifi model there was no activation needed other than sync with itunes which would be a waste of time at the store. I dont know why they would take the macbook out of the box for you unless you requested it. And by the sound of it you can buy 3G right from the iPad anyway so they might not need to activate it which would give them no reason to unbox it. The only reason they took iPhones out is so you could use them faster since they take up to 6 hours to work.

When I got my iPad in an apple store the guy assumed that I wanted it activated and told me we would head over to the computer to do so, but when I gave him a confused look he asked if I just wanted to take it home. If I did it a second time I would mention right off the bat that I will activate at home.

iPhones require activation b/c there is a contract. Neither version iPad requires a contract. They may ask you if you need help setting your iPad up (I was) but its not required. I kindly refused myself as who doesn't enjoy a good unboxing.
