Where its way too hot.
If I purchase a mac off of ebay and it is new in box but from an individual, Will apple honor the warranty without a receipt? (since I am not the primary buyer)

The answer is yes, but they will only honor it the day they think it was sold. Say if the seller bought it the 20th sometimes it comes up on the 30th. So the receipt is to verify the correct day.

The more important question is: How do you know it is new in box? How do you know it's not a 1 year old machine still in the box (in which case there would be no Apple warranty left)
How do you know you will get a machine at all once you have sent the money?

Apple notebooks are among the most common fraudulent auction items. They are desirable and are seldom if ever sold on a discount.

If you are looking at a 'new' machine that is discounted 20% or more below the AppleStore price, that means it is probably not new, or it is stolen, or it is a fraud.

Very good points ram.

Thanks for the guide link. In my case, this is for an imac. Would the 20% differance also apply on imacs also?

ask the seller for the serial number then go to Apple's support site where you'll be able to enter the number and get an estimate of how much of the warranty remains

Yes - the dealer wholesale price on new Macs is approx. 4% to 7% below the AppleStore price. (Yes, your Apple dealer makes less on a typical consumer Macintosh than they do on a brand name surge suppressor).

So if you are looking at a new iMac with a substantial discount, there's some reason. It may be a refurb, or an old model, or one of the other options above.

Don't buy a Mac on eBay. Just... don't. You are asking for pain.

Buy a refurb directly from Apple, or a used one from Craigslist if you can meet the seller locally and see/test the machine before buying.
