I have a 27inch retina imac I usually work off of. In the event I don't have a power block is it ok to charge the macbook off of the imac using a usb c to usb a cable or is this not suggested. Had anyone tried this before?

I don't have a rMB, but there is no reason at all you cannot do this. It will just charge a little slower than off the power brick.

You may have to close the lid in order to get it to charge at all, but no problem doing so.

I would guess mine charges 8-10 hours on the iPad 12w block. I charge every night from the iPad block.

USB-C has some strong logic built in to protect your devices. As long as you're using one of the officially approved USB-C cables, don't see any reason you couldn't use a USB-C to USB-A cable for pretty much anything.
