Should I be using the regular ac adaptor that came in the box or should I use the extension that also came in the box?

What is the difference between the two?

Finally, should I have the mbp charged whenever possible and use battery when I actually cannot charge?

The extension is only needed when the cord on the adapter doesn't reach far enough. The adapter is the same.

The extension adds length. That's all its there to do. It doesn't affect anything. Do you need it to be longer? Then use the extension cable.

I use the extension cord when I'm traveling abroad to countries abroad that use 220V AC. I often shock myself when using a 220V outlet if I use the duckhead only.
