I have an ipad 3 and a new hdmi connector from apple. I connected it to a 65 inch lcd. every thing i viewed went to the top and bottom of the screen but on the sides there are these black bars. is this normal or is there some way to make it go full screen on the sides?

i could be totally wrong, but from my experience, play around with the settings on your tv.
on my tv (46" Dynex LCD) there is a "full screen" mode [forget what they call in, but it's full screen]

which tv model do you have?

Question about connecting to tv

Black bars on both sides will appear when your iPad is set to portrait mode. If it's in portrait and you make it full screen (which I don't think you can), it will look very stretched out and it won't look nice. When in landscape mode, it switches to full screen.

ahh didn't know about that. I've only connected my MBP. thanks :)

That is normal.

"Mirroring" is exactly what it means. What you see, aspect wise, on your 65" screen is exactly what you see on you iPad.
