Question about copying applications

So I am going to get a new hard drive, and was wondering if I could just put all of my applications on an external hard drive and then just drag them back onto the new hard drive. If I did this would all of the apps still be activated and work and everything?

Why not use the Migration Assistant that is part of the OS???

ok sure if I do that, will it work? I don't really know how that program works.

wouldn't time machine also handle this?
