When I enable do not disturb does it mean that I do not have to put my phone on silent, so I can leave my switch on and do not disturb will silence my notifications for me?

Exactly that. Your phone shouldn't even light up.
 
Oh, thanks, so i never have to touch the switch ever again

I use them for different things.

DND for night time where I don't want phone notifying me of anything.

I use the vibrate function when in a meeting, restaurant etc where I don't need the sound disturbing me, but it's still good to know something is happening.
 
If Apple would only add proper scheduling to it, it'd be far, far more useful to me.

I don't know many people who have the exact same schedule all 7 days of the week.


After that, they can allow texts and emails from favorites through as well.

I too would like finer grained controls. I often miss calls on nights out from lost friends because it has turned on automatically at the weekends.
