Question about EDGE/DATA Plan for iPhone

Hello,

I understand that you need a data plan to browse the internet, SMS, Youtube, checking stock, email, etc... whenever the WIFI network is not available.

So if you have an unlocked phone and you are within the US ATT's network but no WIFI around, with your old ATT sim or other carriers' in it, will the iPhone automatically connected to EDGE and download those data constantly? or when ever you manually press the request button (either internet, email, Youtube, etc...)

If the iPhone does that automatically even when the phone is OFF. Then I guess you all need to add a data plan to your existing voice plan to prevent a big bill when it comes.

So as my understanding, unlock the iPhone only serve 2 benefits: Avoiding a new 2-year contract and be able to use other carriers other than ATT.

Please tell me more about the data plan.

With the unlocking software you can go into the edge settings and fill in your service providers edge info.
If you dont do that you'll have no edge available.
