Question about external HD spin up

Is there a way to prevent OSX from spinning up the external HD's even though I am not accessing it. Reason I am asking is because it seems that every time I leave my iMac alone for a while (sleep mode is not active btw) the external HD's spin down, and anything that I try to open (Safari, iPhoto, Firefox, etc..) the stupid external HD's have to spin up first (beach ball for a few seconds) then the program fires up. Is there any way of stopping this behavior. I am on SL btw but this also happened in 10.5. I have 3 1TB externals 1 USB 2 Firewire.

I'd wonder what you are storing on your external HDs.
I have 2 external firewire HDs, 500gb each. I get the beachball briefly when something tries to access the external HD. However, this doesn't happen unless the app is looking for something on the external HD. It would be nice if there was a way to control external HD spindown, but I don't think OSx has a way to do it.
