Question about external modem

I just bought a dual-core PM, which does not have a modem included.

The estimated ship time for Apple's external USB modem is 1-2 weeks, which is quite a bit longer than I'd like to wait.

Will any external USB modem work?

I've seen several other brands, but none say if they will work with Macs or not. Considering it's USB, I imagine it will - but can never be certain.

Any ideas?

I'd much rather buy a (less expensive) non-Apple modem that works than wait at least a week for Apple's modem.
