Good morning. I set up my new iPhone 15 Pro Max this past Friday by doing a simple transfer from my iPhone 13 Pro Max. It was the first time I had ever done it in this manner. The transfer seemed to go smoothly and after completion I turned off Find My and removed the 13 PM from my iCloud account. However, I then get a popup on my new phone that it needed to be updated to 17.02. Once I did that, it forced me to go through the entire set up process again. I then logged back into my iCloud account on my 13 PM and went through the transfer process again. I believed everything was fine.

Everything seemed to be going well with my 15 PM (phone number was activated, the phone apps and settings were all transferred appropriately, etc.). However, I now get a message that I cannot back up the new 15 PM to iCloud as there is not enough space. This confuses me as it shows that I only have 3.3 GB used (out of 5). But when I check the settings under iCloud, it shows that there is a 1.1 GB back up for my 13 PM! So I’m wondering if it is still retaining all the information from the older phone and thus is trying to duplicate both phones on the iCloud account. I’m a little hesitant to turn off and delete the 13 PM backup through the iCloud settings as I am concerned that that will wipe out everything on both phones.

I’m sure I experienced user error somewhere along the line and I’m hoping someone could help me decipher what’s going on.

Thanks.

I think you are correct that it's saving both phones. My iCloud backup has both phones too. You could delete the 13 PM backup to free some space as long as you have everything you need from it.

You get a temporary iCloud storage boost if you don’t have enough space for 21 days when purchase a new device. Once you check everything is there, you can delete the old backup from the previous device and backup the new device.

Thanks for the replies. I can now backup the 15 PM on iCloud (it only shows 2.2 GB being used) and the 13 PM is no longer listed as a temp backup. However, the temp is now the 15 PM, which shows 4.4 GB. I’m concerned about deleting that as it might delete the 2.2 GB backup I was just successful in completing. And I already traded in my 13 PM.

I’m confused.

ETA: Does the temp backup eventually get auto deleted? I thought that it gets deleted once a backup of the new device gets completed but I did that (at least I thought I did) and it’s still showing.

I’m not getting the option to use temporary storage. I have icloud but it’s not sufficient enough to allow me to perform a backup. It’s giving me the message saying the backup cannot be completed due to insufficient icloud storage. I’ve tried to backup in general settings, transfer or reset phone. Also tried deleting and turning off icloud backup. Any clues?
