So this weekend I decided to do a clean install of Mojave (10.14) onto my system.
My system is a Mid 2010 Mac Pro 6-Core 3.33 GHz 6GB RAM w/AMD Radeon R9 280X 3GB.
I've done this before, erase the system drive then install the OS using a bootable USB drive.
Well things didn't go so well. Come to find out (I didn't know this), the OS that I put on the USB drive a while back actually has a time limit imposed on it due to the signed certificate mumbo jumbo. So having erased the system drive (basically lobotomizing the system), it then proceeded to tell me that it couldn't install the OS. Being the only computer, no way to rebuild the USB installer with a current signed version.
No internet recovery was available. Never used Time Machine in my life. But... I still have my old install discs for the system! Shut down the system popped out the optical drive, manually forced it to open the tray, inserted disc, closed it, replaced drive, powered it up while forcing it to read from the optical drive (held down the c key). Drive started churning, the screen looked promising... then it just hung there.
The original discs were Snow Leopard (10.6.4). So my question is now this... is it possible to reinstall the original OS that shipped with the system using the original discs? Obviously there have been some firmware updates... and of course the video card is newer. I'm unsure if the newer video card was the culprit... I would have thought it would have resulted in a black screen. I do have the original graphics card that shipped with the system so I could have swapped it back if need be. But the firmware changes obviously cannot be undone.
Anyone have any insight as to why they original system discs basically just hung the system? Had the gray loading screen with the circle process symbol that basically stopped and hung there. The drive continued to churn a bit but eventually nothing. After a few minutes I powered down the system figuring it wasn't going to do anything.
Oh, I took the machine to an Apple Store and they installed Mojave via the internet for me. You would have thought I brought them the plague... an EOL system in their store. They literally said they aren't allowed to check in EOL devices such as mine and said if this doesn't work, there's nothing more that they can do. Yay my system had a HDMI port on the newer graphics card, otherwise I would have had to tow my display port display down there to even attempt this.
Again, any insight about the original system discs would be appreciated!
