Question About Installing Themes

So i am pretty new to Macs and i was wondering i have seen a lot of themes for macs all over the internet and had recently downloaded one for Snow Leopard but after installing it nothing happened. Now i read about Shapeshifter being used on the older Mac OS but that it was not compatible with snow. Is there another application like that that i need to use to get the theme to work?

any help would be much appreciated
