Question about ipad and icloud

I bought my first ever ipad last night so far its great But I don't understand the icloud. Is it like Googles Picasa where I can upload photos and have them streamed into my gallery? Does apple offer any service like picasa?

All the photos you take, if you photo stream enabled will automatically upload to iCloud and download to other devices with iCloud (iPhone, mac, etc...) also documents from certain apps (Pages, Keynote, etc...) will sync between iPads and iPhones, along with calendars and contacts.
