Question about iPhone 6/plus NFC

So I know the NFC is for Pay but can it also be used to pair with devices like speakers and those little NFC tags?

I don't think there is developer access to the NFC chip at launch (meaning only Apple Pay can use it for the time being), though that might change in the future especially since the Watch was shown to be capable of unlocking a hotel room door through a 3rd party app.
