Question about iPhoto/Image Capture in Lion

Previously in my experience with Tiger and Leopard it has not been possible to import a few selected photos from an SD card to iPhoto. I have to do the infamous workaround - opening Image Capture, selecting and downloading the ones I want, and transferring to iPhoto. I seriously don't know why Apple has missed such a simple function.

Easy question; Can you now do that with Lion or Mountain Lion?

This is a feature that has been included in the last few versions of iPhoto and does not depend on running Lion or Mountain Lion. Purchase the current version of iPhoto from the App Store and you'll be set!
