Time Machine backs up your hard drive automatically to an external hard drive as long as it is connected...

Does that mean if I have a 150g HD in my computer that I will need to dedicate at least 150g on the external HD just for back ups? Also Time machine keeps track of multiple dates in the past so will the space required increase the farther back we wish to go?

I would imagine this is about right. You could probably shave off a few percent of that due to compression but I would say that you would want at least an equivalent sized hard drive.
